The titanium-carbonitride (TiCN) coating has a hard, smooth surface that resists chipping and wear and prevents material from accumulating on the cutting edge. They are especially suitable for aluminium.

2 flute ball nose end mills with composite coatings such as titanium-aluminum-nitride (TiAlN) dissipate heat better than other uncoated end mills, especially at high speeds. At high temperatures, the coating forms a layer of aluminum oxide that transfers heat to the chip and keeps the tool cool even when used without lubrication.
